Technology for Secondary/K12 Teacher Candidates

First Tech Task: Mind Adjustment or "Here comes the future!" (Required - In Class)

Watch and think about the implications to Education of the following videos:

The Question of Change

Shift Happens

A Vision of K-12 Students Today

NOTE: Technology can be the Golden Grail, the thing teachers have been looking for to motivate their students and encourage superior performance. We must go where they are to bring them to where we would like them to be---technology is where they are!

Second Tech Task: Social Bookmarking and Images (Optional but can help you complete your Ed Tech Journal)

  • Consider using iGoogle: Sign up for a google email account, then "sign in" and choose igoogle from the Google front page. This will allow you to set up a custom home page that will look the same from any computer you use. Especially consider using the "bookmarks" Google Gadget so your essential bookmarks will be saved in a Web 2.0 environment ("out there" instead of on any one computer) and available to you---Whatever! Wherever! and Whenever!

  • Set up a Delicious Account. This is social bookmarking that allows you to swim the waters of the Web and simply click on a button installed on your browser to save site addresses according to tags that fit your conception of the topic or interest of the page you are saving. Collect websites that you MIGHT be interested in in the future and they will be there, all connected up with your mental tags. OR, share your delicious bookmarks with colleagues and access the power of SOCIAL BOOKMARKING. [Video Tutorial - Social Photosharing]

  • Set up a Flickr Account (Flickr Classroom Applications) If you are already using Photobucket, you may substitute it in place of Flickr or link to your Facebook account

  • Look at MorgueFile for free photos

  • Set up a StockXchg Account. It's free and gives you access to hundreds of high quality photos to use in your presentations and curriclum projects. Be sure to go to the "Advanced Search" and set "Restricted OK" to "no" so there will be no copyright issues for the images you download. Right-click and save any image, then upload to Flickr or Photobucket for future use and for archiving out in Web 2.0 land.

  • Play around with picnik  It is a Web 2.0 "Photoshop" tool that can pull images from your computer or (more powerfully) from your Flikr or Photobucket account and do great things to them. Quick, easy, and can be used anywhere.

  • Look over wordle.net   This is just a fun tool that will create a word cloud graphic based upon work frequency. Fun and you may be able to figure our how to use it to embellish a presentation or curriculum project.

Third Tech Task: PBWiki instead of Web Page (Required)

Set up your PBWorks Account--

The front page is your new Home Page

You'll probably want to have some images on your Flickr account

Any you may want to edit those images on your new picnik account--it's free!

We'll want to have:

  • an image

  • an introduction

  • a table (to be defined later)

  • an email link

  • and links in your sidebar

  • and we'll want to play a lot

The Seventh Tech Task is where we will complete the front page and make it your PBWiki-based electronic portfolio.

Fifth Tech Task: Your Ed Tech Journal (Optional)

Begin your Ed Tech Journal (on your PBWiki):

Create a new page on your PBWiki. Name it "Journal."

Create a section (use the horizontal bar) for each technology tool we investigate in class.

Include the following information for each tool:

  • Name: (e.g., Animoto
  • Description: (copy and paste if you wish)
  • At least two specific teaching/learning applications (e.g., "students would . . .")
  • The equivalent of at least a half page reflection of the strengths and weaknesses associated with using this in the classroom.
  • A link to any application you created using this tool (or embed it into the PBWiki page)

Sixth Tech Task: Professional Links Sidebar (Optional)

Click on "Edit this sidebar" at the bottom of your sidebar that is at the right side of your PBWiki. Populate your sidebar with professional links that will help you and the viewers of your page navigate within your PBWiki and to external resources. One possibility is to link to a page of links you have created within your PBWiki. For example, you might link to a page you created with links for parents. Consider linking to sites like SuccessLink and others that are rich sources of lesson plans, etc.

You might want to insert horizontal lines to help in the layout of your links. You can also insert a table to give you an option of background colors. Graphics can also be added to your sidebar.

Be sure to have at least 10 links to meet the requirements of this assignment.

Seventh Tech Task: PBWiki-based Portfolio (Required)

The electronic portfolio is the continuation of your initial work on your frontpage. If you need to create a new PBWiki with a professional name, do so before you begin work. If the PBWiki you have already been working with is acceptable, then continue working on that one.

Your seminar instructor may give you more specific instructions concerning the introduction but revisit the example link below to see how the frontpage should be organized:
